Software robots fighting for supremacy on a computer screen. Stunning three-dimensional images of molecules and other structures so real that you feel you can touch them. An online fashion show that's a bit of a mystery.

These are some of what will be taking place at SFU Surrey's Open House on March 26. A second open house will be held on April 23. Both take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Besides the SFU community, open house organizers are also extending an invitation to high school students, their parents, teachers and counselors, and to the general public.

“It's a chance for us to show off the campus and our programs, especially the TechOne program,” says Matthew Grant, a student recruiter at SFU Surrey. TechOne is the common program taken by all first-year students at SFU Surrey. Following TechOne, students can continue in the information technology and interactive arts program at SFU Surrey or apply to transfer to other SFU programs.

Among the open house highlights:

• Robowars - Thrill to the combat as robots battle on computer screens. A team of first-year SFU Surrey students will take on rivals from the Burnaby campus in a tournament to determine who can create the best software robots in the Java programming language.

• 3-dimensional molecules - Don your virtual reality glasses and experience the sensation of being inside a caffeine molecule in the RAVE Fakespace lab.

• Virtual fashion - View an online fashion show - a continent-spanning collaboration between SFU Surrey students and designers from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

The show will feature virtual displays of artwork and avatars (images representing users in a multi-user virtual reality) dressed in online fashions. Take part in solving a cyber-mystery by analyzing rumours, puzzling over clues and finding hidden rooms.

SFU Surrey is located at Central City, 10153 King George Highway, Surrey (a block from the Surrey Central SkyTrain station).
