The No. 1 seeded SFU women's basketball team had to settle for a fourth place finish at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championships in Hamilton, Ontario March 7-10.

The team lost 79-62 to the University of Laval in a bronze medal match. The team had earlier lost a shot at another gold with a defeat to the No. 4 ranked University of Winnipeg.

Clan scoring leader Jessica Kaczowka played her final game for SFU after a five-year career, during which she was twice named CIS player of the year.

“We didn't play team defence very well and when that happens we have breakdowns and give up too many points,” said Clan coach Bruce Langford. “I think our youth caught up to us in this game.”

Ironically, the Clan beat Winnipeg in a match that clinched their Canada West title in February.

Winnipeg settled for a silver medal after being defeated for the title by the University of Victoria.
