In an effort to increase research activities in B.C., the provincial government has provided a $2.1 million grant to the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR), a national organization connecting the country's best researchers with their international peers to tackle complex problems in the sciences and social sciences.

Since its inception in 1982, the CIAR has invested $23 million in B.C., including more than $3.3 million between 2000 and 2002. Almost 25 per cent of CIAR researchers are affiliated with B.C. universities, including SFU.
