This year, SFU will bestow Governor General medals on four students instead of the usual two. With the steady growth in the university's graduate and undergraduate enrolment, SFU is for the first time eligible to receive extra medals.

The terms of the award allow extra awards when full-time equivalencies (FTEs) exceed 15,000 at the undergraduate level, and 2,500 at the graduate level; SFU now boasts 15,880 undergraduate FTEs, and 2,566 graduate FTEs. In June, silver medals will be presented to the two undergraduates with the highest cumulative grade point averages, and gold medals will be presented to the two graduate students with the highest cumulative grade point averages.
