Over the summer and into September, SFU will welcome a signifcant number of new faculty.



Jonathan Jedwab
Jonathan Jedwab has been appointed a tenure track associate professor in the department of mathematics and the managing scientific director of IRMACS. He was most recently a principal mathematician with Hewlett-Packard Labs in Bristol, U.K. He holds a Dipl. Math from Cambridge University and a PhD from the University of London.



Alexander Karaivanov
Alexander Karaivanov joins the department of economics as a tenure track assistant professor. A recent PhD in economics from the University of Chicago, Karaivanov also holds an MA in economics from that university and a BA in business administration from Hogeschool van Utrecht in the Netherlands, as well as an honors BA in economics from Sofia University in Bulgaria.



Michelle Levy
Former criminal defense attorney Michelle Levy has been appointed a tenure track assistant professor in the department of English, where she will teach British literature of the romantic period. She returns to Canada from the University of California where she recently earned her PhD in English. She holds a MA and BA from the University of Toronto.



Cenk Sahinalp
Cenk Sahinalp has been appointed as a tier II Canada Research chair in computational genomics in the school of computing science. Sahinalp, who received a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park, has held positions at numerous institutions, including Bell Labs, the University of Pennsylvania's centre for bioinformatics and the University of Warwick. Most recently he was an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve university. Sahinalp's research focuses on algorithms and bioinformatics.



John Stockie
John Stockie returns to the SFU department of mathematics as a tenure track associate professor. Stockie, who until recently was the Atlantic coordinator for MITACS network centre of excellence, will also take on the role of associate scientific director of MITACS. Most recently an assistant math professor at the University of New Brunswick, Stockie previously spent one year at SFU as a PIMS postdoctoral fellow and another as a MITACS postdoctoral fellow. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics from UBC.



Yue Wang
Yue Wang has been appointed to a tenure track position as assistant professor in the department of linguistics. She comes to SFU from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York where she was an assistant professor of linguistics and director of the Chinese program. She holds a PhD in linguistics and cognitive science from Cornell University, a MA in linguistics from the same university and a MA in English phonetics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Wang's research specializes in speech science.



Stephen Wright
Stephen Wright joins the department of psychology as an associate professor with tenure. He returns to Canada from the U.S. where he was recently a tenured associate professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Wright holds a MA and PhD from McGill University. A social psychologist, his research focuses on prejudice, intergroup relations, language development and the development of self knowledge.
