Beekeeper Robert Wood of California already had a beard but was happy to watch it grow and buzz at the same time while fellow beekeepers looked on. He was one of about a dozen participants of the Western Apiculture Society convention, held at SFU August 13-17, to don a pheromone-laced disc to attract more than half a million bees released on SFU's unused playing field. While the bee-beard ritual is described by some as invigorating, Wood says the bees “felt warm, and tickled.” The more serious convention agenda covered topics from the science of good queen bee evaluation to the business of honey production.
