New faculty appointments for the fall semester:



Mirza Beg
Mirza Beg joins the school of engineering science as a tenure track assistant professor. Beg, who recently earned a PhD in biomedical engineering from John Hopkins university in the U.S., is interested in the field of imaging science and high-performance computing.



Jacob Eyferth
Jacob Eyferth has been appointed a tenure track assistant professor in the department of history where he will teach modern Chinese history. He was most recently a post-doctoral research fellow in east Asian research at Harvard University. Eyferth has also held post-doctoral research fellowships at Rutgers University, Fairbank Centre for East Asian studies and at the University of Oxford's Institute for Chinese studies. He holds a PhD in sinology from Leiden university in the Netherlands.



Rachel Fouladi
Rachel Fouladi joins the department of psychology as a tenure track assistant professor. Most recently an assistant professor in behavioural science at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson cancer centre, Fouladi earned her BA, MA and PhD at the University of British Columbia. Fouladi researches statistical modeling in social and health psychology.



Shane Gunster
Shane Gunster has been appointed a tenure track assistant professor in the school of communication. Gunster comes to SFU from Ryerson university where he held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) post-doctoral fellowship and conducted research in advertising. He holds a MA and PhD from York university in Toronto.



Joan Hu
Joan Hu joins the statistics and actuarial science department as a tenure track assistant professor in biostatistics. A PhD graduate of the University of Waterloo, Hu's thesis won the Pierre Robillard award in 1995 for best PhD thesis at a Canadian university. She has also worked as a research scientist at the Harvard school of public health, at the centre for biostatistics at Harvard and was most recently an assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Memphis university in Tennessee. She currently holds a Natural Sciences and Research Council (NSERC) university faculty award.



Gary Parker
Gary Parker, recently a vice-president with Transamerica Life Canada, has returned to SFU as an associate professor with tenure in the department of statistics and actuarial science. Parker was on the SFU mathematics faculty from 1992-1996 before moving to work in industry. He holds a PhD in actuarial science from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and a MSc from Universite Laval, Ste. Foy Quebec.



Sean Swagerman
Sean Swagerman joins the department of English as a tenure track assistant professor. A recent PhD from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where he earned a teaching excellence award as a lecturer, he will teach writing and rhetoric in the SFU English department.
