With the appointment of Joanne Curry as Simon Fraser University Surrey campus director by VP-academic John Waterhouse, the team that will lead SFU's newest campus over the next few years is in place.

Curry will direct day-to-day operations and be responsible for external relations for the campus, while Tom Calvert will oversee Simon Fraser University Surrey's academic program as acting director of the information technology and interactive arts program.

Curry's appointment marked the end of seven months of transition as SFU established its Surrey campus, assuming responsibility for the programs, students and assets of the former Technical University of British Columbia (TechBC). A senate committee is looking into the longterm future of the campus and its program. Curry, the former CEO of TeleLearning Solutions Inc., and one-time director of the university industry liaison office, says, “I like the challenge of creating new paths and not being totally bound by existing practice or models.”

One of her major goals is to bring SFU's three campuses closer together. “It's critical that we share knowledge and resources across the campuses and provide opportunities for our students as well as the faculty and staff.” Calvert feels his role is to provide continuity and leadership in evolving TechBC's program “into exciting new programs within SFU.”

Calvert has been on faculty at SFU for 30 years, including five years as VP-research and information systems and eight years as dean of interdisciplinary studies. In 1997 he took a leave of absence to help get TechBC off the ground as its VP-research and external affairs.

He feels the new campus has the potential to become a meeting place for technology and the arts, “where undergraduate and graduate students can pursue degrees that lead to exciting careers in the new economy.”
