When students at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus head to class this fall, they’ll be taking some of their courses in the state-of-the-art Westminster Savings Credit Union theatre.

Westminster Savings Credit Union and the Westminster Savings Foundation are donating $300,000 towards the cost of the 200-seat theatre, which is located on the mezzanine level of the new SFU Surrey campus at Central City.

SFU President Michael Stevenson says: “We’re pleased that Westminster Savings Credit Union and the Westminster Savings Foundation have made this very generous contribution to the new SFU Surrey campus. Westminster is know for its involvement with local communities. The donation shows a commitment to higher education in the Fraser Valley.“

The Westminster Savings donation is a major contribution towards the $3-million fundraising campaign for SFU’s expanded campus at Central City. “With this donation, we are proud to support the many students who will use the theatre in their academic endeavours,” says Emmet McGrath, chair of the Westminster Savings Foundation.

Barry Forbes, President and CEO of Westminster Savings Credit Union, notes the theatre will also be used for community events such as public lectures and debates. “Many people will benefit from this theatre through continuing education and community events,” he says. “Having the second largest credit union foundation in the country, we are able to contribute to the economic and social development of our communities, which is a key part of our business philosophy and commitment.”

The $80-million expansion to the Surrey campus will enable it to house more than 1,500 students. The campus will officially open in September .
