This educational exhibit documents a journey taken by the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky to British Columbia in 1925. In recent years, new information has been made available from a family archive in Cuba that sheds light on Mayakovsky's travels in Canada. Tonel, originally from Cuba, has had privileged access to this archive. It was while researching the journey that Mayakovsky took around the Soviet Union in the years 1926 to 1929, doing readings of his poetry in more than thirty cities and towns, that Tonel came upon the previously unrecorded British Columbia tour, which, similarly, included many cities and towns. Tonel is a visual artist and art critic. He was recently an adjunct professor and sessional lecturer in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia. Curated by Bill Jeffries. This exhibition was created on the occasion of the Inaugural Symposium of the Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars.
