LABORATORY 1; EXTERNAL ANATOMY

 

At the end of this laboratory session, you should be able to:

 

1) Distinguish between the three main groups of living fishes using morphological features.

 

2) Distinguish between the two orders of agnathans and the three groups of cartilaginous fishes; the sharks, skates and ratfishes.

 

3) Indentify the major external features of agnathans, chondrichthyes and osteichthyes.

 

4) Identify the major body types, mouth/snout forms and caudal fin types of bony fishes.

 

5) Describe generally the differences in gill anatomy between the three main groups of fishes.

 

6) Categorize the teeth of specimens and draw conclusions regarding potential eating habits.

 

7) Prepare, type and identify chondrichthyes and osteichthyes scale types.

 

8) Be functionally familiar with the external features of fishes in order to participate in field trip exercises which include local fish identification.
