GENERAL BIOLOGY

Prerequisites:     High School BIOL 12 or equivalent, or BISC 100

Note:   This course may be applied towards the Certificate of Liberal Arts.

Laboratory:   Open lab (mandatory), up to 4 hours/week  (B8210)

 

Course Content:

 

Cell biology    

 

á       cellular chemistry: structure and properties of biological molecules

á       cell structure: membrane and organelle form and function

á       cellular reproduction : mitosis, cytokinesis and the cell cycle

á       DNA, RNA and gene expression

á       cell energy: principles of energetics

á       enzymes

á       cellular respiration

 

Plant biology  

 

á       photosynthesis

á       flowering plants: morphology, anatomy and growth

á       plant nutrition

á       transport processes

á       plant reproduction

á       control systems: plant hormones

 

Animal biology  

 

á       structure and function of tissue types

á       integumentary, skeletal and digestive systems

á       circulatory and respiratory systems

á       excretion and homeostasis; hormones

á       nervous and motor mechanisms

 

Examinations and grading:        Midterm - 20%, Lab Midterm  - 20%, Lab Final - 20%, Final - 40%

Note: There is a 5% penalty for non-attendance in tutorials.
