The program’s objective is to serve as a focal point for research and
education aimed at enhancing aquatic biodiversity and the benefits derived
from them, with an initial emphasis on species of salmon and their ecosystems. My activities range from conducting field research in remote parts of BC's Central Coast to teaching undergraduate courses in fisheries and conservation.
The Chair has been funded through a partnership between the British
Columbia Leading Edge Endowment Fund, the Pacific
Salmon Foundation, and numerous private and corporate donors.
The Chair has been named after Tom Buell, former president, CEO and chair of
Weldwood of Canada. He was an ardent outdoorsman with a deep concern for environmental
protection and the sustainability of Pacific salmon stocks.
Interested in Graduate Studies or a Post-doc?
I am looking for a graduate student (preferably PhD) or post-doc to study links between salmon-derived nutrients and breeding bird communities at our remote field site on BC's Central Coast. General information can be found on the salmon projects page. If you're interested, please get in touch.
Graduate Student Funding Available
Dr Don Rix and his family have generously made available awards of $5,000 to NSERC scholars who join my research group for their MSc or PhD. Students must have an NSERC to qualify for the Rix Family Student Awards.
