Financial Support

pipet.jpgAll graduate students pay tuition fees upon registration each semester, according to the fee schedule set by the University. The most current fee information is available from the Registrars Office. This fee decreases in later semesters.

It is the policy of the Department of Biological Sciences that all graduate students should have some financial support either from scholarships, teaching appointments, faculty research grants, or some combination thereof. Most students who are not scholarship holders can be supported by a combination of teaching assistantships and research grants. For example, a student may hold a teaching assistantship for one semester, a Graduate Research Fellowship for the second semester, and be financed from the senior supervisor's research grant for the third semester.

In particular, new and prospective M.P.M. students should consider applying for the Thelma Finlayson entrance scholarships (see below).

Teaching Assistantships
faller.jpgTeaching Assistants are selected graduate students who spend part of their time assisting the Department in running laboratory and tutorial classes. TAships are made available each semester based on the teaching requirements of the Department. A full TAship consists of 210 hours per semester for class time, course preparation and grading laboratory notebooks or tutorial papers. TAships enable students to gain important experience in teaching as well as extend their knowledge of biology. M.P.M. students are eligible to apply for appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA). Because the number of applicants usually exceeds the number of positions available in any semester, the Department is unable to guarantee an appointment. Foreign students should note that they require a work permit to hold employment in Canada.
