Happy World Poetry Day!

it is our great pleasure to announce the winners of the second annual Biological Sciences Poetry Contest.  We would like to thank all the contributors.  This was a delightful task for the outreach and engagement committee!  We enjoyed reading all the poems and the margin between first and third was very small.

1st prize – "Gale" by Dr. Pat Baird (CWE)
2nd prize - "Anapest Mangement" by Saif Nayani (Gries Lab)
3rd prize – "The Tale of the Persistent Tomato" by Hayley Kellam (Punja Lab)

On behalf of the Outreach and Engagement Committee congratulations to the winners!

GALE
By Pat Baird

The armadillo blew away last night
The winds came screaming out of the west,
The barren scrub never lessening their force,
Driving dust before them into nonexistent crevices.

The mechanical pencils cease to function
And the film advance on the Olympus scrapes forward,
Permanently etching metal parts.

Today, the sun beats mercilessly without the wind;
The birds cease singing.
Penguins stand panting,
No energy to look for a colorless shrub
Under which to escape.

Thirsty chicks, abandoned,
Wander aimlessly in the heat,
Their hoarse peeps engulfed
By the stifling air.
