
SFU's Athletic Awards are presented annually at the Clan Gala, as selected by the department. This year's winners include the following Biomedical Physiology & Kinesiology students:
Top Clan Scholar Athlete:
The Top Clan Scholar Athlete is selected from entire SFU Clan Athletics student-body (over 300 student-athletes). The recipient is in either in their junior (third) or senior (four or fifth) seasons at SFU and has achieved the highest cumulative GPA of any Clan athlete in their respective field of study.
Winner - Robyn Buna
Female Athlete of the Year:
The Lorne Davies Female Athlete of the Year award is voted on by Clan coaches and captains based on the nominations from their respective programs, and is given to the athlete who achieved the highest level of athletic success while representing Simon Fraser University over the past year.
Winner - Robyn Buna
Robyn is a third-year guard on the SFU women?s team, won the award after lifting the Clan to a 2009 CIS Championship. She was named a CIS Tournament All-Star and Second Team All-Canadian, leading SFU during the regular season with a 16 points-per-game scoring average.
Bill DeVries Award:
Bill DeVries formerly served as the Vice-President of Administration at SFU. He was a very strong supporter of the CLAN basketball programs. The Bill Devries award is presented to the CLAN member who has displayed combined excellence as both a student and an athlete.
Winner - Heather Mancell
Heather has helped her team win six NAIA National Championships, earning her All-American Honours.
A Kinesiology major, Heather's GPA of nearly 4.0 has helped her become a Clan Top-Ten Academic performer twice during her four years at SFU. A Kinesiology and CGPA student at SFU, Heather has done an exceptional job of balancing her academics and athletics. Heather also serves her fellow athletes as an Academics First Coordinator.
Heather has volunteered for a number of clinics, camps and fundraising initiatives throughout her four seasons at SFU, and recently organized a ?Read-and-Run? program with a local school to help encourage lifelong fitness and reading.
Hero Amongst Us Award:
Each SFU team's most inspirational athlete is a finalist for the Hero Amongst Us award, which recognizes a student-athlete who inspires his or her team with their hard work, determination, dedication and perseverence.
Winner - Bernd Dittrich
As quarterback on the Clan Football Team. Bernd overcame a separated shoulder to his throwing arm in the second week of the season and still played every remaining game during the year, leading SFU back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
