Prospective Graduate Students

Degrees

The School of Kinesiology offers two distinct Master’s degrees, M.Sc. (Thesis), M.Sc. (Coursework) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

Degree Requirements

M.Sc. (Thesis) requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of graduate courses, a Master's thesis proposal and a successful thesis defense. It is expected that degree requirements can normally be completed in six semesters.

M.Sc. (Coursework)
requires the completion of 30 credit hours of graduate courses in the School of Kinesiology, including presentation of a completed research project. Although it may be possible to complete the M.Sc. in one calendar year of full-time study, the program is structured for a normal completion time of five semesters of full-time study. Starting in the fall semester of 2007, it is anticipated that the fee structure will be changed from per semester to per credit hour, making the program more accessible to students who are also employed

Ph.D. Normally the supervisory committee will specify any courses necessary to complete the student’s academic preparation. In exceptional circumstances, the supervisory committee may allow the student to proceed without additional course work over and above that for a Master’s degree. Degree requirements include successful completion of comprehensive examinations, a dissertation proposal, two seminar presentations and a successful thesis defense.
