Admissions

Question:
I'm interested in one of the Kinesiology programs. How do I apply and can I get transfer credit for work done at another post-secondary institution?

Regardless of which program you are interested in, all students must apply for and meet general University admission requirements before they can be approved in to a particular program. If you have admissions related questions, when you're on our Burnaby campus, drop in to see the new Student Central. To meet with an Admissions Advisor or to ask general admissions or program questions please call at 778.782.3397 or askSFU@sfu.ca

If you have attended a local community college and you want to see how your courses will transfer, visit the BC Transfer Guide's website at www.bccat.bc.ca. A transfer guide does not exist for post-secondary institutions outside of B.C. Transfer students from outside B.C. may be required to submit detailed course information for evaluation of transfer credits.

Here are some other websites that you will find helpful: for applying to SFU and registration inquiries (you can apply on-line here as well), visit students.sfu.ca; for general SFU information. Also, the website www.sfu.ca is very useful.

Question:
What are the admission requirements for grade 12 students?

Current admission requirements for student wishing to entering Kinesiology directly from high school:

An average of 80% calculated on the following four provincially examinable courses:
        • English 12 or Français première langue 12
        • Mathematics 12
        • Two of: Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12

The following grade 11 courses are also required for entry into the program but not included in the admission GPA:
        • English 11 or Français première langue 11
        • Principles of Mathematics 11
        • Chemistry 11
        • Principles of Physics 11

Please note that you will also need to meet general admission requirements as set out by Admissions at Simon Fraser University. For information on the SFU Calendar and SFU's admission requirements, policies and procedures (for example, TOEFL requirements, tuition fees, scholarships, application deadlines, services, etc.), please visit: students.sfu.ca/ps (there is even an on-line application form); contact the Registrars for a hard copy application form.

Question:
I am a grade 12 student, but I only have one of the Science courses. Does that mean I can’t get approved into Kinesiology?

SFU offers the grade 12 equivalent of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Please refer to the appropriate department for details. You may take the grade 12 equivalent and apply that in the elective portion of the overall Kinesiology major program. You will not be offered direct admission if you do not have the right selection of courses. However, you may still apply to SFU and complete the Internal Transfer program.

Question:
I am currently an SFU student but in a different program.  How do I switch to Kinesiology?

Please refer to the Internal Transfer section of this website; you may also download the Program Approval form for details. Admission GPA fluctuates from semester to semester, depending on the number of seats available and the number of applications. Admission under the 11 course model has typically been between 2.40 to 2.60 on the specific 11 courses of Set 1 and Set 2.  The admission GPA for Set 1 alone is higher.  If you have started on Set 2 you will need to complete all course in Set 2 in order to be admitted with the GPA for Set 1 and Set 2.

Question:
I am applying from a BC College. What are the requirements for me?

All students must apply for general admission to the University first. Complete information about Simon Fraser University is available on the Registrar's/Admissions Office website at: students.sfu.caFrom this site, you can access the complete university calendar, on-line admissions application, scholarship and financial assistance information and the current timetable and exam schedules.

Prior to applying for admission to the School of Kinesiology, you must complete the SFU equivalent of (or be in the semester of completing) the following 11 courses:

ALL of:
     • BISC 101-4 General Biology
     • CHEM 121-4 General Chemestry and Laboratory I
     • CHEM 122-2 General Chemistry II
     • CHEM 281-4 Organic Chemistry I
     • KIN 142-3 Introduction to Kinesiology
     • MBB 221-3 Cellular Biology and Biochemistry

ONE of:
     • MATH 151-3 Calculus I
     • MATH 154-3 Calculus I for the Biological Sciences

ONE of:
     • MATH 152-3 Calculus II
     • MATH 155-3 Calculus II for the Biological Sciences

ONE of:
     • PHYS 101-3 General Physics I
     • PHYS 120-3 Modern Physics and Mechanics

ONE of:
     • PHYS 102-3 General Physics II
     • PHYS 121-3 Optics, Electricity and Magnetism

ONE of:
     • PHYS 130-2 General Physics Laboratory A
     • PHYS 131-2 General Physics Laboratory B

Applicants are selected based on an admission GPA calculated over these 11 required courses.

The admission GPA has been around an B+/A- average for external students -- this is a fluctuating GPA and is determined by the number of seats available and the number of applications. We set high standards for external students as we like to see students "perform" at SFU first. Most students get admitted into SFU via the internal transfer route because external students don't have the required 11 courses, or the required GPA (for further details on the internal transfer method. As an internal transfer student, one can also take specified additional courses to "bump" up the GPA. If you find that you will have to enter the Kinesiology program via the internal transfer method, you should come see the Advisor for an advising appointment.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EXTERNAL APPLICANTS MAY NOT APPLY UNDER THE FIVE COURSE MODEL.

Only courses completed at SFU (and not previously taken elsewhere) are used in the Kinesiology admission GPA. Normally, at least 15 credits from core courses are required to establish a basis for the GPA calculation. Exceptions must be approved by the School. Please also note that if one or more courses have been duplicated (repeated), the grades from all course attempts will be used equally in calculating the Kinesiology admission GPA. We normally do not accept external students for direct admission as we like to see how one performs academically at SFU, so my advice to you is to NOT complete ALL the 11 courses as outlined above at College.

Re: transferability of courses -- please visit www.bccat.bc.ca This is the official transfer guide. It will be very difficult to inform you of how your courses will transfer over from College if it is not listed on the above website. There is an official way of determining transfer credits when you apply to the University, where the Admissions office at SFU will send our office detailed course outlines (which you would have provided) to evaluate; however, this process is completed only when you are an approved (ie. accepted) student. They still might be able to assist you "unofficially" via phone; if you would like to speak to someone at the Admissions office regarding transfer credit, please either email them at undergraduate-admissions@sfu.ca or call between 10-11am any week day morning at
(604) 291-5513.
