Course Registration & Adds/Drops
Question:
May a student in lower level, register in upper level courses? For example, I still need two courses (KIN 201, KIN 207) to complete my lower level requirement in order to declare a Kinesiology major. Can I take some upper levels courses at the same time?
Lower level students should not be registered in upper level courses. However, if you are close to completion of your lower level requirements and are only able to get into relevant upper level courses, it is possible, if space is available and you have the prerequisites. However, registration priority is given to approved Kinesiology majors. Please refer to the registration restrictions in the Kinesiology section of the Course Timetable. You should make an appointment to see the Undergraduate Advisor to plan your course load.
Question:
Can I register in a course if I do not have the prerequisites? I do not have the prerequisites for KIN XXX but I'm sure that I can handle the course.
It is important for students to take courses in the correct sequence so that faculty can build on previous knowledge rather than starting from first principles. Students should plan in advance so that they have the required prerequisites for the courses they wish to take. Students will not be granted permission to take a prerequisite for a particular course concurrently with the course. Students who lack the prerequisites for a particular course will be dropped from that course, usually within 24 hours of registering. Kinesiology has a strict policy regarding prerequisite waivers.Question:
I do not have the listed prerequisite for a particular course but I have taken something equivalent at another institution. Can I register for the course?
Question:

You will need to obtain a prerequisite waiver from the Kinesiology Undergraduate Advisor. Please note that a waiver will require some evidence that the advisor can use to determine whether you have satisfactorily met the requirements of the prerequisite. It is important to plan your prospective timetable before your registration date to allow time to get the necessary waiver entered ahead of registration.
Question:
I really want in to KIN XXX and I know someone who is going to drop it. Can I just attend classes and then get their space later?
Normally, no ADD's will be accepted in Kinesiology courses after the first week of classes. A student cannot "give" a space to another. When a student drops a course, that space is not released immediately back into the system in order to prevent a student with a high registration priority number (RPN) "saving" a space for a student with a lower RPN.
Question:
I checked the available space in a particular course on GoSFU and it said that there was space available; but I was unable to add the course. Why couldn't I get in to the course?
Some courses have registration restrictions placed on them. This means that a number of spaces in the course are reserved for specified student groups. Courses with registration restrictions are indicated in the Course Timetable by an * asterisk and may appear to have space available, however, this space may only be added by the specified student groups. Please see the notes at the start of the Kinesiology section of the Course Timetable or on GoSFU for information on the specified student groups.
Question:
If a course is full, how can I get in?
GoSFU keeps wait lists for all Kinesiology courses until the end of the first week of classes each semester. During this time, all adds and drops are handled by GoSFU. Spaces open up as a result of students doing course changes and dropping courses; either because their co-op job is finally realized or they failed the prerequisite. After the end of the first week of class, GoSFU no longer permits students to add classes. However, it may still be possible to add a course during the second week of class if space is available.
