Certificate in Health and Fitness Studies

General Information

This program provides the opportunity to complete a coordinated program of university study on a full or part time basis in the areas of health, fitness, and nutrition.  It provides basic knowledge in the functions of the healthy human body at rest and during physical exertion. The program is useful to those supervising training and/or fitness programs, to sport coaches, and to the general public. Please note that it is not a degree program nor does it provide certification as a Kinesiologist.


Admission

Students must be admitted to SFU prior to applying for the certificate program. Admission is governed by the University regulations. See http://students.sfu.ca/ps/.

Please note that a maximum of nine credit hours are transferable to the certificate from other academic institutions, including the Open Learning Agency.

After being admitted to Simon Fraser University, submission of a completed program approval form to the kinesiology undergraduate advisor is required for formal acceptance in the program.

 

Program Requirements

Students must complete all of the following required courses:

Students must complete 3 courses (9 credits) from the following list of electives:

A minimum 2.00 GPA calculated on courses counting toward the certificate is required for graduation.
A current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate is required at the time of certificate completion.
Program completion is normally within five years of admission to the certificate program.
Please note that credits applied to the Certificate in Health and Fitness Studies may not be applied to the Certificate in Applied Human Nutrition, or any other certificates offered at Simon Fraser University. For those who wish to complete both the Health and Fitness Certificate AND the Applied Human Nutrition Certificate, it is best to consult the Kinesiology Advisor for assistance in course planning.
