How do I import course content?

Step 1. After creating a new course, you should see a list of options under the heading "Next Steps" in the lower left corner of your course shell. Click on the "Import Content" link in this list to go to the Import Wizard.

(If the "Next Steps" links are not available, you can get to the Import Wizard by going to the "Course Settings" screen and clicking on the "Import content into this course" button on the right side.)

Step 2. The Import Wizard will appear as shown below. If you want to import content from a previous WebCT course, click on the “Copy content from another Canvas or WebCT course" button.

Step 3. Next you will see a drop-down menu labelled "Or Select from the list." The menu should list your previous courses. Be sure to click the "Include completed courses?" checkbox if you want to copy content from a converted WebCT course or from a completed Canvas course.

If you have a lot of courses, you will not see a drop-down list of courses. In that case you will need to use the "Search for Course" field to find your course.

Step 4. You can copy everything by clicking the "Copy everything from …" checkbox, or you can uncheck the box to get a list of content elements that you may choose to import for your course.

Step 5. You can also adjust the due dates. When you have made your selections, click on the "Import Course Content" button.

Step 6. A blue colour bar will indicate the progress of the copying process.

Step 7. Congratulations. You have now completed your import. If you have problems with the import process or with the imported content, help is available. Contact the Teaching and Learning Centre's Learn Tech team at learntech@sfu.ca to request support.
