How do I create a course shell for a calendar course?

Step 1. Log in to Canvas. The Canvas home page will look something like this:

Step 2. On the right side of the page, you will see a button labelled "Start a New Course." Click on this button to begin the process of creating a course shell or sandbox.

Step 3. You should see your own computing ID in the "Courses Taught By" field. If not, you can type in your computing ID and click the "Update" button. This action will generate a list of the courses in which you are a teacher.

Step 4. To create a course shell for one or more courses* on the list, click the checkbox(es) beside the appropriate course(s) and click the "Create Courses" button (shown below). In the example shown above, we are creating a course shell for CMNS 253W. (*As long as the courses are not cross-listed or multi-section. For cross-listed courses and courses with multiple tutorial sections, see How to set up a cross-listed or multi-section course.)

Step 5. A screen indicating that course creation may take up to five minutes will appear (see the image below). To check whether the course has been created, click on "Course List" to see if "CMNS 253W" is listed.

Step 6: The "Course List" screen will show you all courses in which you are enrolled (in this case, as a teacher). In the example below, you can see "Sandbox - lw1081," but not "CMNS 253W." Once CMNS 253W appears, click on this link to get to your new course shell.

Step 7: Congratulations! Your calendar course has now been created and is ready for you to add content. If you have course content from previous courses in either Canvas or WebCT, you can import it by going into course settings. See Importing course content for more details.
