How do I set up a cross-listed or multi-section course?

If you plan to teach a cross-listed course or one with multiple tutorial sections, you can combine all the sections in one Canvas course shell or set up separate Canvas course shells for each section. A number of considerations apply. Please contact a learning technology specialist in the Teaching and Learning Centre (learntech@sfu.ca) to discuss the best solution for your needs. The steps presented below outline the process for creating a course shell containing multiple sections.

Step 1. Log in to Canvas. The Canvas home page will look something like this:

Step 2. On the right side of the page, you will see a button labelled "Start a New Course." Click on this button to begin the process of creating a course shell or sandbox.

Step 3. You should see your own computing ID in the "Courses Taught By" field. If not, you can type in your computing ID and click the "Update" button. This action will generate a list of the courses in which you are a teacher.

Step 4. To create a course combining several courses in one course shell, click the checkboxes beside the courses you wish to combine, then click the "Cross-List Courses" checkbox, and finally click the "Create Courses" button (shown below).

Step 5. Another screen indicating that course creation may take up to five minutes will appear (see the image below). To check whether the course has been created, click on "Course List" to see if the course name appears. When it does, you can click on the name to go to your new course.
