Programs suspended during COVID-19
For the safety of our volunteers and community, we are adjusting many of our programs to virtual formats while suspending others until further notice, in response to COVID-19.
** Program suspended due to Covid19 until further notice ** The Surrey School District (Education Services), the SFU Surrey TD CEC, and Blackwood Partners have teamed up to run a pilot project in Central City Mall. Modeled after existing Early Learning initiatives, this exciting initiative brings the school district's programming out of the schools and into the public arena, reaching new families. Existing initiatives for pre-school aged children and their families are among those most sought after and they often operate at or over capacity. This early integration has allowed the identification and elimination of barriers that families face in their dealings with the education system.
Game On! is a program run by Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver that inspires boys to pursue healthy and active lifestyles. Game On! mentors are men who are enthusiastic about healthy, active living and enjoy working in a group setting to share their experiences and skills.
Surrey is a very culturally diverse city with 40% of the population foreign born, and receives more Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) than any other BC municipality. This rich diversity brings vibrancy and innovation to the City, however both newcomer and "receiving" communities in Surrey are experiencing challenges in adapting to new ways of being and living such a diverse city.
The SFU Surrey - TD Community Engagement Centre is partnering with Pathways to Education, a program for youth in low-income communities that helps students graduate from high school and successfully transition onto post-secondary education, training, or employment. Pathways addresses systemic barriers to education by providing leadership, expertise, and a community-based program proven to lower dropout rates. The program is being offered for the first time in Surrey, and will provide a range of supports for youth including free tutoring, social and mentoring activities, one-to-one educational support, bus passes, grocery cards, scholarships and positive relationships with adult role models.
The SFU Surrey–TD Community Engagement Centre is working with Red Fox’s flagship Active Play program which gives Indigenous and inner-city kids the chance to be healthy, have fun, and get inspired by positive youth role models from their own communities.
The SuperChefs Cookery empowers children in the battle against childhood obesity by teaching the essentials of balanced nutrition, food preparation, and social etiquette toward inspiring lifelong habits of physical and social well-being. Under the direction of world class professional chefs and educators, students learn in an enriched setting focussed upon the joy of cooking while engaging in a residential program featuring team-building, athletic and artistic pursuits.
The Youth Leadership Development (YLD) Program gives youth ages 10-18 a chance to grow as individuals and learn what it means to be a leader in their community. Youth explore relevant issues in today’s society in a safe and fun environment while building positive relationships and preparing for their future. This program, hosted by the YMCA, is held at the SFU Surrey-TD CEC once per week on Thursday evenings and includes SFU student volunteers as youth leaders.
