Online learning
Whether you are an experienced online instructor or developing your first online course, this page provides an overview of resources and services to support online teaching available from the Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE).
CEE is excited to continue to offer support for online course design and development. As the need to support emergency remote instruction is reduced, we are recalibrating our programming, resources, and production support for instructor-led online (OL) and blended (B) courses.
CEE’s services align with best practices in course design, including encouraging instructors to start their course planning and production at least two semesters in advance of the course offering.
What programming and workshops does CEE offer?
Our new OL and B programming is dedicated to creating communities of practice, capacity-building for instructors, and space for instructors to commit to their course design and production. The new programming includes:
- Blended Learning Design cohort and workshop series
- Getting Started with OL program (launches January 2022)
- Just-in-time online orientation sessions for faculty (April 2022)
- Short learning technology workshops: EdTech Tuesdays, Intro to Canvas, Intro to Zoom (ongoing)

How can I get started now?
Don’t have time for a workshop? CEE has developed resources to help you get started on your own.
Review a series of brief modules on creating an online course and working in Canvas.
Consult this step-by-step guide for many of the functions of Canvas, including other integrated technologies such as Zoom. This resource includes screenshots, videos, and examples. Feel free to reach out to us or explore the Canvas Instructor Forum if you have additional questions.
This collection of teaching tip sheets consists of one- and two-page PDF documents addressing various teaching and learning issues. Topics include:
- Facilitating Online Discussions
- Designing Assignments for Online Environments
- Hosting Debates Online
- Online Group Assignments
- Preparing TAs to Lead Tutorials Online
This Canvas shell includes quick modules for TAs and TMs (and for supporting TAs and TMs) about responsibilities and good practice for both online and face-to-face teaching.
Beginning in March 2020, CEE created an extensive resource bank for instructors to consult during emergency remote instruction. The information and resources remain available here but are not actively updated.
Teaching Consultations
Book a one-on-one consultation or contact us via the blue “How Can We Help You?” button at the bottom of this screen. If you have worked with someone from the CEE team who knows your teaching context, feel free to reach out to them directly.
How can I get help building my course in Canvas?
CEE’s services align with best practices in course design, starting with a minimum of two terms in advance for planning and production.
- CEE offers a wide range of consultations, workshops, programming, and resources to meet the needs of instructors at various stages of course design and development.
- As a participant in programming, such as the Blended Learning Design Cohort and Getting Started with Online, you will have access to individualized build support for various Canvas course elements.
- In some instances, CEE is able to build course components in Canvas (e.g., banners, icons, assignments, exams) for a limited number of courses with a minimum of two semesters in advance planning.
- Please reach out to via the blue “How Can We Help You?” button at the bottom of this screen to book an individual consultation to discuss your production needs and timeline.
- Please note, CEE’s support is focused on the design and development of courses prior to the semester the course will run. There are certain limits to what we can support in an active course.
