From April 28th to 30th, 2016, SFU CELLTR co-hosted the BC TEAL conference at the SFU Surrey campus. Over 300 people attended the conference, which brought together researchers and expert practitioners not only from our province, but from across Canada, Australia, and Spain to discuss effective practices in English language teaching.  The conference was organized by co-chairs Nathan Hall and Alex Bale from BC TEAL, and Dr. Saskia Stille and Dr. Joel Heng Hartse from CELLTR. Faculty members from CELLTR and the Faculty of Education presented at several sessions. Special thanks to Dr. Steve Marshall and doctoral student Sherry Breshears from SFU, Dr. Scott Douglas, Dr. Sandra Zappa-Hollman and doctoral candidate Ron Darvin from the University of British Columbia, and Dr. Medhi Riazi from Macquarie University for their participation in the research panels organized by CELLTR.

In addition to the conference, the BC TEAL organizing committee held its first ever Pre-Conference Institute, offering in-depth 3-hour workshops on topics including: academic writing, equity and language assessment, content and language integrated learning, and language learning technologies, amongst others.  We hope this collaboration will support ongoing discussion and action on EAL issues across the province, and promote research-based practice in the field.
