Dr. Wendy Steinberg, Director of Life Long Learning's ITA Seminar, and CELLTR Director Dr. Valia Spilotopoulos facilitated an International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Symposium on June 14, 2018. Faculty and staff from Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, and the University of British Columbia were involved in organizing the event. The ITA Symposium involved participants sharing recent research and best practices in ITA training and education, including language proficiency and assessment, intercultural communication and acculturation, and ways in which universities can support ITAs and the students they teach. It is hoped that this initial symposium will lead to greater awareness and coordination on ITA issues in our institution, as well as help develop a more formal province-wide network amongst the three research-intensive institutions who are increasingly welcoming international graduate students.
