Nuclear Science Minor Program at Simon Fraser University

This program is offered by the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Department of Physics. Many exciting opportunities for research and employment in the fields of nuclear science and particle physics are available for students today. Examples include:
- properties of subatomic particles and nuclear decay
- fundamental symmetries and tests of the Standard Model
- precision atomic mass measurements
- reaction studies
- nuclear astrophysics
- techniques and applications in nuclear medicine
- nuclear energy and radiation safety; environmental issues
Researchers at Canada's national TRIUMF facility are at the forefront of many of these studies. Many of these researchers are also faculty members at SFU and University of British Columbia nearby. The close association of these schools allows students the unique opportunity to contribute to research programs of current interest while completing coursework and advanced degrees. Students who accumulated 60 credits are encouraged to apply for this program. The Nuclear Science Minor students will be in a position to assess fundamental topics ranging from the origin of matter in the Universe up to nuclear science applications such as nuclear energy and current debates associated with its environmental and economic problems.
The core of the Nuclear Science Minor consists of the following courses:

CHEM 482 Directed Study in Advanced Topics of Chemistry

NUSC 341 Introduction to Radiochemistry

NUSC 342 Introduction to Nuclear Science

NUSC 344 Nucleosynthesis and Distribution of the Elements

NUSC 346 Radiochemistry Laboratory

NUSC 444 Special Topics in Nuclear Science

NUSC 485 Particle Physics

PHYS 385 Quantum Physics
