The name chromium is from the Greek word "chroma" meaning "colour".

Like most of the metals, elemental chromium is steel grey in colour however it forms a large number of highly coloured compounds.

The presence of Cr is responsible for the green colour of emeralds (beryllium aluminum silicate) and the red colour of rubies (aluminum oxide).
