The name cobalt comes from the German, "kobald" meaning goblin or evil spirit (although this one doesn't look particularly evil).

 

The blue colour used in this block for the chemical symbol, is tyipical of that of "cobalt blue" the blue pigment used since the middle ages that contains both cobalt(II) oxide and aluminum oxide.
