The word nickel is synonomous with our 5cent coin.

According to the Canadian Mint the 5 cent coin was made of 100% nickel in 1922.

However coins made since 2000 are mostly steel and are only plated with nickel.

The beaver first appeared on the Canadian "nickel" in 1937.
