November 29, 2018

Thank you to all of our families for their patience and understanding during the past week’s events. As Building 1 will be undergoing repairs for an extended length of time, we have been working hard to find a suitable temporary location for the programs affected. It is important we ensure that any temporary space we move into meets your child’s needs, as well as our regulatory requirements.

Please see below for information regarding temporary relocations for your child’s program:

CRACKERS

Temporary Location: Blusson Hall, SFU Campus (Room 9402, Lower Level) – Effective Tuesday, December 4th

Street parking is limited, but pickup and drop off spaces will be available in the underground parking lot across from University Highlands Elementary (these are dedicated child care drop off spaces for SFUCCS families; please ensure that your parent parking pass is displayed).

ESPULETA

Temporary Location: Sparks Program – Effective Tuesday, December 4th

We ask that when dropping off and picking up your child that you please park in the West Parkade, as we have many trucks and vans from various departments and companies working on repairs, and they will be using our designated spaces in the residence parking lot.

SKYFIRE

Temporary Location: TBD

At this time, we are awaiting confirmation on a suitable space and hope to be in contact as soon as possible with information on a date for Skyfire families to resume childcare in a temporary location.

We thank you again for your patience and understanding.

To accommodate Espuleta and Les Petits remaining in the west-side childcare complex during repairs to Building 1, Voyageurs and Sparks will be moving into temporary spaces on the SFU campus. If you have a child in one of these programs, please see below for your temporary location:

November 27, 2018 - 5:33pm

Good afternoon,

We have received a further update from SFU Facilities on the state of all four programs located in building one that suffered extensive water damage yesterday from the downpour. They are not habitable at this time and we continue to look for alternate locations for your child’s program. Until that can be finalized we are not able to offer childcare services.

At this time we are working with SFU and our Licensing Officer to secure alternate spaces. This will take some time as the locations will need to be available and inspected before we can begin to relocate. We are unable to provide childcare services to Les Petits, Espuleta, Skyfire and Crackers families until we have secured available and appropriate locations as deemed by our Licensing Officer. We anticipate that the relocation will not happen until sometime next week, however, we will update you when we have more information.

Due to the length of time that we are unable to provide childcare services, SFUCCS will fully reimburse families childcare fees.

Thank you for your understanding!

November 27, 2018 - 9:05am

Good morning,

We are very thankful that the rain has stopped for a bit this morning. But it appears that damage caused by the water ingress into the four programs (Crackers, Skyfire, Espuleta and Les Petits) is quite extensive and will necessitate a considerable amount of demolition. In each area, the bathrooms and kitchens are the most affected. Wall mounted cabinets will have to come down in order to remove water damaged drywall.

Pumps were put on the roof last night to remove the water accumulation caused by plugged drains. The plumbers will clear the drains this morning and remediation work will start as soon as these areas dry out.

Now that we have more information on the scope of the damage, we are sourcing out alternate spaces on campus and at UniverCity where we might relocate. Any emergency space that we consider must meet our regulatory requirements as well.

SFU Facilities promises to update us later today on an expected timeline for the remediation.

All this is to say that we understand that this causes you and your family considerable unexpected stress. We will do our best to find alternate arrangements for the care of your child(ren).

Until further notice all four programs, Crackers, Skyfire, Espuleta, and Les Petits will remain closed.

I will provide another update later today when I receive more information from SFU Facilities.

Sincerely,

Pat
