Sustainable Community Development Certificate

Creating effective champions for sustainable development

Sustainability—a six-syllable word with a dozen definitions. But what do you really need to know when the world around you is changing so fast?

SFU’s City Program and the Centre for Sustainable Community Development offers a certificate designed to give you the practical information you need today, from the most experienced consultants and instructors available.

It's a flexible program comprised of eight two and three-day intensive courses that can be completed in 10 months.

What is Sustainable Community Development?

Sustainable community development refers to developing the varied dimensions of a community as well as the land and environment on which it depends.

The certificate is based on a six-point Community Capital Tool developed by SFU Professor Mark Roseland. A sustainable community seeks solutions and strategies that advance six areas of community capital — physical, ecological, social, human, cultural, and economic.
