The Communication Student Union (CMNSU) is a student organization at Simon Fraser University for all students of the Communication program - majors, minors, as well as students currently taking any class offered by the School of Communication.

What We Do
2009/01/03

The Communication Student Union (CMNSU) is a student organization at Simon Fraser University for all students of the Communication program - majors, minors, as well as students currently taking any class offered by the School of Communication. Every semester the CMNSU organizes events for their peers and provides opportunities for students to gain valuable communication skills and volunteer experience.

The CMNSU works closely with Communication Co-op to bring students fantastic events like the Annual Communication Symposium and Careers in Communication. We also organize events independently of Communication Co-op like Out of Context, a very popular student-professor pub night held every semester at Steamworks. As well as organizing events the CMNSU creates swag for students, including the extremely popular The Medium is the Message t-shirts. Every year the CMNSU also provides students with the opportunity to get their writing and photos published in our annual magazine, InContext.

If you would like to get more involved with your student union feel free to attend out meetings! Spring semester (2009) the CMNSU is holding meetings every Wednesday from 12:00-1:00 in the CMNS common room - K8663.

Academic

The CMNSU is a great way to get to know your fellow students that can help you find out more about the myriads of topics in the School of Communication, especially since many students in third and fourth year may have experience with first and second year classes. They are also a great source of information about what professors are knowledgeable on topics in the school that you may be interested in.

In the past, the CMNSU has also participated in academic conferences with other student unions that have proven to be highly enjoyable and horizon-broadening for us all.

Career

The CMNSU provides almost limitless opportunities to gain career experience! By participating in the organization, whether you're an executive or the member of a committee or project group, your expeirences working in groups, or in a managerial or technical capacity, can easily be cited on a resume, and we make great references as well! Here are just some of the things you can get experience in with the CMNSU:

Like your degree, your experience with the CMNSU can be whatever you're willing to make it.

Social

Up on Burnaby Mountain, it can seem that social opportunities are few and far between. The CMNSU helps to change that by promoting a sense of unity among Communication students, who are a diverse, interesting, well-connected and generally cool bunch. In addition to provide networking opportunities, we also encourage faculty and students to mingle outside the classroom to get a better idea of what lies within the field of Communication and beyond.
We also understand that students are busy people and that getting together may be very difficult, so this website and everything on it is provided to help Communication students get to know each other beyond the lecture hall.
