The Centre for Canadian Studies (CNS) has been informed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), Dr. Lesley Cormack, that CNS will have no budget for teaching or operating beyond the end of the Spring semester 2009. Although only the Senate can close academic programmes, a zero budget effectively closes CNS in any case since it cannot offer courses or otherwise operate.
No in-class CNS courses will be offered after this semester. CNS
Distance Education courses will run during the summer semester and not afterward. The Dean's office has made a commitment that students who are majors or minors in Canadian Studies will be able to complete their programmes. No new majors or minors will be admitted. Students unsure of how to proceed with their programmes should consult Lynn Kool in the Political Science Department or student advising in FASS. There are a number of courses in Departments at SFU that have been designated as containing "significant Canadian content" by CNS. It is likely that all or most students will be able to complete their programmes with these courses. If not, FASS advising will make sure that it is possible for students to complete your programmes in another way.
The CNS office will be closed as of 1 April 2009.
It is with great regret that I make this announcement.
