Steering Committee

The Steering Committee reports to the Vice President, Academic.

  • New members of the Steering Committee are nominated by members of the College and ratified by the Steering Committee.

  • The functions of the Steering Committee are to plan for the development and governance of a college on Burnaby Mountain, to promote public discussion of the plan, to organise events, and to nominate members and ratify their membership in the college. In short, the functions of the Steering Committee are to promote and administer the purposes of the College.

  • The Steering Committee is chaired by an elected Chair (or designate). A majority of the members of the Steering Committee shall be continuing faculty in the University, normally representing all Faculties.

  • The Steering Committee will have up to 10 voting members. The duration of the initial appointments shall be staggered to ensure continuity in the Committee.

  • The Steering Committee may constitute an Executive Committee (the Chair plus at least two others) to address administrative business.

  • With the concurrence of the VP Academic, the Steering Committee may establish an international Council of Advisors in order to further the objectives of the College.

  • The Steering Committee will meet at least once per semester, and will approve and forward an Annual Report to the Vice President Academic and the member ship of the College on its activities. It will approve budgets and expenditures, and make decisions on programs and projects.

  • Membership in the College is open to the University community or to individuals outside the University, on approval of the Steering Committee. Nominations for membership can be made, by the Steering Committee or other College Members, with appropriate documentation. Also, applications for membership from students will be considered regularly by the Steering Committee. Members of the College, and others, may be invited to Steering Committee meetings as appropriate.

  • Support/staffing for the Steering Committee shall be provided in accordance with University procedures.

  • Amendment of this Constitution shall be by recommendation to VP Academic from the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee shall provide one week’s notice of a motion (and its content) to amend the Constitution to all members, and the Chair must ensure that each Steering Committee member knows that such a motion is to be discussed and decided at a forthcoming meeting.
