The purposes of the College are:

To provide a place for students, faculty, and academic visitors to engage in dialogue and collegial activities which address international, regional, and local interests.

To promote multi-disciplinary interaction at the university, informal academic communities and networks, and common research projects.

To sponsor lecture series, seminars and international conferences. To enable the university community to hold seminars and workshops of general interest, including providing publicity for endowed lectures.

To facilitate the continuing academic and intellectual involvement of retired faculty.

To promote the development of a residential College on Burnaby Mountain, open to both international and Canadian students, with particular focus on doctoral students.

To provide a space for university centres and institutes to interact.

To create a facility that aids the University to recruit outstanding faculty in a competitive international market.
- To encourage the discipline of integration and synthesis, and stimulate a sense of wonder.
