Soyoung Park makes real-time visual art, incorporating new media technology in her pieces. For her Master’s study at Simon Fraser University, she researched the uses of Umberto Eco’s theory of ‘Open work’ in the field of interactive art. Currently, she is pursuing a practice-based PhD in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research is concerned with the ambiguity inherent in interpreting art. An artwork naturally points audiences in a certain direction by virtue of the artist’s composition; yet this pointing can never be closed. The resultant ambiguity encourages audiences to voluntarily search for the intention of the work, by offering them multiple layers of interpretation instead of confining them to a single intention. It is the artist’s role in forming this ambiguity that particularly interests Soyoung.
