Images, icons and files

Copy is only a part of how users get information from your website. Images, icons, graphics and files convey additional, at-a-glance messages that are crucial for cohesive and scannable content.

Icons are an effective way to intuitively represent content by using symbols. However, before you consider using icons, you should be aware of the following:

  • Icons should be used sparingly and only in instances when there is a clear and consistent usage for them across the site
  • If an icon needs a title or supporting text, it shouldn’t be used
  • Icon design needs to align to SFU branding
  • Connotations can vary widely across cultures and therefore icons might create ambiguity
