SFU computing science professor JC Liu, an expert in networking and multimedia systems, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Liu is honoured for his contributions to multimedia communications and Internet content distribution.

His research focuses on diverse aspects of computer networking and multimedia, from computing science theory to practical issues involving system design, development and optimization.

In 2015, he received the prestigious Steacie Fellowship to design, develop and optimize an energy-efficient framework for crowd-sourced content.

With funding from national and international sources, Liu has produced more than 90 refereed journal papers and 130 conference papers. Many of his works are considered essential references in the multimedia communications and networking community, with total citations exceeding 11,000 and a Googl e Scholar H-index of 48.

His research has received several best paper awards, including the ACM TOMCCAP Nicolas D. Georganas Best Paper Award 2013, the ACM Multimedia Best Paper Award 2012, and the INFOCOM Test of Time Paper Award 2005,

Liu obtained his BEng (Cum Laude) from Tsinghua University, China, in 1999, and PhD from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with a scholarship from Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Upon his graduation in 2003, he was presented with the Hong Kong Young Scientist Award by the Hong Kong Institute of Science for his research excellence and outstanding promise. While at SFU, he has continued to demonstrate an outstanding record of research that is driving industry standards in his field, as well as a strong commitment to mentorship and service.

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. It has more than 421,000 members in more than 160 countries and is a leading authority in many areas, including telecommunications, information technology, consumer electronics and power-generation products and services.

Less than one-tenth of one percent of IEEE members worldwide are selected as Fellows in any year. Fellow status is awarded to individuals with "an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest."
