Certificate in Editing
Become an editor
Editors are at the heart of great writing. They read critically, help writers communicate clearly and eloquently, and check facts. They also manage grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style. Whether you’re reading a well-written book or a web page, you can be sure that an editor worked behind the scenes to shape it.
Why SFU's Certificate in Editing?
How our program made a difference for one grad
Learn from industry professionals
At SFU, we understand how critical editors are to effective communication. We offer the only editing certificate program in Western Canada, and our instructors are all active in the publishing industry.
You’ll sharpen your editorial skills with training in copy editing, proofreading, grammar, substantive editing, the principles of clear language, how to create and work with style guides, and the editor’s role in the publishing process.
In addition to our required editing courses, you’ll choose one or more specialties through electives in fiction, desktop publishing, web editing, and more, and then apply your new skills to a final editing project.
Take the next step in your editing career
When you graduate, you’ll be ready to begin an editing career—or take one to the next level. SFU’s Certificate in Editing will signal to employers that your education is current, and that above all, you’re thoroughly qualified.
Our editing program will also help prepare you to write the rigorous proofreading, copy editing, stylistic editing, and structural editing certification exams with the Editors’ Association of Canada.
Study part-time—in Vancouver, online, or by distance
All of our editing courses are part-time, so you can continue working while you study. If you can’t attend classes at SFU Vancouver, you can take many of our courses online or by distance. By our Fall 2014 semester, you’ll be able to choose between the online editing certificate, the on-campus editing certificate, or a combination of both.
Is SFU’s editing certificate right for you?
Do you love language and reading? Do people often ask you to look at their written work? Are you interested in print and electronic publishing and design? Do you have a knack for grammar and clear communication? Are you an experienced editor in need of some polish or a refresher? If so, this program is for you.
