Fees and Funding

Fees Deadline
Your tuition and student fees are due near the end of the second week of the first month of the term (see dates and deadlines calendar for specific dates).

You have options for how to pay your fees.

Penalty on outstanding tuition and fees
A 2% late fee penalty will be assessed after the tuition due date and on the 1st of each month thereafter (24% per annum).  Please note that the 2% is not an interest rate. It is a 2% penalty charge on any outstanding fees that you may have after the payment due date. You are liable for any penalty charges applied to your account.

Note that if you have outstanding fees on your student account, you cannot enroll in a subsequent term, and other penalties will be applied.

NOTE: The following items are subject to late fee penalties:

  • UPASS fee
  • GRAD Rec & Athletic Fee 
  • GRAD Student Services Fee 
  • Graduate Graduation Fee
  • GRAD Student Activity Fee 
  • GRAD Tuition

Opt-outs
To avoid any late penalty charges, it is important to pay all outstanding fees while waiting to be opted out of an item (ie. Health, Dental, U-Pass BC). If your opt-out request is approved, the amount of the item will be returned to your account. You can keep the amount on your account to pay for future fees or you can request for a refund.

Early Completion Refund
If you have completed your degree requirements during the first calendar month of the semester, you may be eligible for a 75% refund on the tuition portion of your student fees. To find more information about eligibility, see the Degree Completion page.

Appeals

The SFU Enrollment Appeals Committee hears appeals for refunds of tuition fees and late payment penalties for classes dropped due to extenuating circumstances beyond your control. Your appeal must be supported with proper documentation, i.e. medical and/or (in cases that involve a death in the family) a certificate of death. Financial hardship does not qualify. You must appeal within one calendar year from the time you dropped the class(es). If you are uncertain about your health, finances, time or other resources, you are advised to be conservative in committing yourself to classes. Although the University allows students to drop classes under extenuating circumstances, extenuating circumstances alone are not sufficient for granting an appeal for a refund of tuition fees.
