SUMMARY:Academic Libraries: Do books matter anymore?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lynn Copeland\, former Head Librarian\, SFU\n\nR
oom 126\, Halpern Centre\, Burnaby Campus\n\nAcademic libraries made the
transition from print to largely electronic journals some years ago but
print books have continued to be the norm -- until recently. The nature
and use of a book for academic purposes is quite different from that of
a regular trade book for personal reading. What are the implications fo

SUMMARY:Foreign Debt and Financial Crises
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Debt and Financial Crises\n\nFinancial Interest Group
Seminar presented by Dr. Ted Cohn\n\nRoom 114\, Halpern Centre\, Burnab
y Campus\n\nThis talk will examine the political\, economic\, and social
aspects of foreign debt and financial crises. Ted Cohn\, who has recent
ly published a book some aspects of the topic\, will focus primarily on
the causes and characteristics of financial crises. Most examples will
be taken from the 2007-8 global financial crisis and the sovereign debt
problems in the European Union and United States. However\, comparisons
will also be drawn with earlier crises such as the 1980s foreign debt cr
isis and the 1990s East Asian financial crisis. Given the current econom
ic uncertainty\, this is a very timely topic.
