From dark to light, a survivor’s story.

I can confidently say that I was born in the wrong place and at the wrong time.  Nevertheless, after a long series of events - some under my control, others less so - my story has culminated in a happy ending at UBC, where I am Professor Emerita in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to share my journey with you. While some of my experiences are more pertinent historically, others are  still relevant today. Life was at times difficult, and sometimes gratifying, but I always found the ride very interesting.

Dr. Martha Salcudean was born and educated in Romania where she obtained Bachelor's and post-graduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering. After twelve years in the Research Centre for Metallurgy, she came to Canada in 1976. She held the position of Professor at the University of Ottawa for nine years before moving on to the University of British Columbia as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering where she is currently a Professor and Weyerhaeuser Industrial Research Chair in Computational Fluid Dynamics.
