Call for After-School Workshop Facilitators

November 10, 2011

Objective: To offer an after-school program on site at Charles Dickens Elementary School 1010 east 17th ave in Vancouver. Our community is made up of a very diverse group of families, all of which deserve equal access to a variety of programs.

We invite potential facilitators to propose programs offering a range of activities appealing to the students of this kindergarten through grade 7 school of roughly 400 children. We are looking for passionate people who want to volunteer once a week for 45-60 minutes and gain experience, resume material and joy in return. The program you design can run from 4-6weeks and be specifically geared to your comfort level. Because school dismissal is at 3:01, the programs should start by 3:15 on days chosen in conjunction with the director, Ana Delgado. This opportunity to design a workshop and work with children in an after-school environment has potential for resume and practicum experience. We would love to hear your ideas!

Possible Workshops include but are not limited to:

  • art – including painting, drawing, paper mache, origami or other area, etc.
  • drama – improv, scene-setting and dialogue, etc.
  • dance – free movement, salsa, ballroom, etc.
  • knitting or other crafts
  • yoga (mats may be available at the school)
  • writing  (generative writing prompts guided by an experienced writer rather than a grammar, ESL or spelling class)

We are looking into having materials funded through the school’s PAC committee but there must be a team lined up first.

Requirements for facilitators:

  • a clean criminal record
  • a fantastic attitude
  • great sense of community
