Business Process Analysis

Improve your understanding of how organizations use business processes to create value.

You’ll learn to develop process models, communicate business process information, define business needs, assess capability gaps and define a solution scope. Other key topics you’ll explore include documentation and validation, software applications for process and enterprise analysis, approaches for developing solutions and an introduction to the business case.

What will I learn?

After completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the importance of business processes in an organization
  • Identify the basic elements and key concepts in a business process
  • Apply Unified Modeling Language (UML) Use Cases and Use Case Diagrams in a team environment
  • Apply Data Flow Diagramming technique using MS Visio in a team environment 
  • Communicate an "as-is" business process to a business audience
  • Describe the importance of scope management and identify methods for managing and controlling requirements
  • Explain why it is necessary to define needs and assess capability gaps in a business process
  • Consider process redesign opportunities in a team environment
  • Define a solution scope as a beginning to developing a business case

How will I learn?

The course features a wide variety of instructional techniques, including facilitated group discussions, thought-provoking exercises that encourage experimentation and analysis, and instructor presentations of theory and best practices.

You will complete regular course reading and participate in exercises, group discussions, case studies and presentations.

How will I be evaluated?

We’ll evaluate your performance in this course on a pass/fail basis using a combination of in-class or take-home assignments, individual or group projects, presentations, participation and attendance. We expect you to participate in discussions and activities and complete all assignments.

Textbooks and learning materials

To complete the Business Analysis Certificate program you will need to pass all nine courses and the final examination. You will also be expected to have read A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide v3), which you can purchase through the IIBA website. In this course, we will reference relevant chapters of the BABOK® Guide.
