Intro to Coding and Apps with Scratch and App Lab

Fire up your thinking and creative problem-solving skills with this full-day introduction to coding and app building. This workshop is for beginners who want to learn basic coding concepts and terms and build some simple apps.

We will begin the day with an introduction to coding and programming terms and we will explore these concepts using the Scratch program, MIT’s block programming language. With Scratch, you will learn to use, remix and create stories, games, animations and apps (among other things). In the afternoon, you will learn how to use Code.org’s App Lab to create simple applications for personal and, if applicable, professional use. We will also show you how to find and use resources to help you continue with your learning.

No prior experience with app development required.

Robin Ulster and James Denby

Robin Ulster and James Denby have taught classes and led workshops on four continents in the past 20 years. They are passionate advocates for the potential of technology to give voice to and empower individuals and groups. For that to happen, however, they believe that people need not just the tools to use technology but also the knowledge of how to create with it. Robin and James have been learning to code themselves in order to bring together their understanding of how people learn and the barriers faced by some learners in understanding technology. The pair wants to break down those barriers and ensure that anyone can code.
