Introduction to Writing Speculative Fiction
The term “speculative fiction” covers a wide variety of writing, including fantasy, science fiction, post-apocalyptic narratives, and stories of the supernatural. What holds them all together is that they are works of free-ranging and unobstructed imagination, bounded only by the limits of what an author can dream up.
In this course, we will look at the issues facing authors who seek to engage their audience at a level far beyond everyday reality. Topics will include the particular requirements of plot development to fantastical narrative, the challenges and possibilities of using mythical beasts or other non-human figures as characters, and how to build a vibrant world and bring it to life in a convincing and readable way. This course is for those who are just beginning as well as for those with some writing experience.
