Donizetti's Maria Stuarda

Maria Stuarda

Join us for an afternoon of delving into the murky past of Elizabethan intrigue and power politics, and exploring stormy 19th-century melodies.

This lecture will introduce you to Donizetti's Maria Stuarda in context. We’ll look at the sources of the opera in history and in Friedrich Schiller’s play Maria Stuart (1800). We'll also explore the composition and performance history, as well as famous singers associated with the title role, including Joan Sutherland and Beverley Sills.
