Fashion’s Olio Folio: A History of Women’s Small Chic Accessories, 1770–1970

As a follow-up to our previous series on short hats, this course is an exploration of some of the smaller accessories necessary for fashionable women from the late 18th century up to the 1970s.

You need no previous knowledge of fashion history to enjoy these lectures; we will provide a brief review before each session.

Please note that enrolment in this course is limited to adults 55+.

What will I learn?

We’ll cover the following topics:

  • Week 1 - Old bags: The history of the portable pocket.
  • Week 2 - Snug as a bug: The history of shawls and stoles.
  • Week 3 - From Catherine de Medici to Peter Pan: The history of collars, cuffs, and handkerchiefs.
  • Weeks 4 and 5 - The mechanicals: Parasols, umbrellas, and fans.
  • Week 6 - Something shocking: Stockings and garters.

How will I be evaluated?

Your instructor will evaluate you based on an essay you will complete at the end of the course. You will receive a grade of “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory.”
